FHS-PK | EndNote 21: A Step-by-Step Guide: Deleting Citation Within Text

EndNote is a reference management tool designed to help researchers organize, manage, and cite their references efficiently.

Deleting Citation Within Text in Word Document

There are times when you may need to remove an existing citation, such as when the wrong citation was inserted by mistake or placed incorrectly. Do not manually delete the citation: Avoid selecting and deleting citations directly in your document. EndNote inserts hidden formatting characters that may not be removed cleanly, leading to document issues. Follow following steps to remove the citation:

  • Use the EndNote tab in Word:

    • Go to the EndNote tab in the Word ribbon.
    • Select Edit & Manage Citation(s).
  • Remove the citation:

    • In the pop-up window, ensure the citation you want to remove is highlighted.
    • Click the arrow beside the Edit Reference button and select Remove Citation.
    • Click OK to finalize

Note: If this citation was only used once in the document, it will also be removed from the bibliography.

These steps help maintain the integrity of the document and ensure that all relevant citation data is cleanly managed.
