FHS-PK | Searching Techniques: Phrase Search & Field Search

This Libguide provides the methods used to locate relevent information from databases

Phrase Search and Field Search

Phrase Search

  • What it is: A phrase search looks for an exact sequence of words in the specified order.
  • How it Works: Typically, quotation marks (" ") are used around the phrase to ensure the words appear together in the search results.
  • Example: Searching for:"climate change impact" will return results where the exact phrase "climate change impact" appears together, filtering out irrelevant hits where the words are scattered

Field Search

  • What it is: A field search focuses on a specific part or field within a database record, such as the title, author, abstract, or subject.
  • How it Works: You specify the field you want to search, either through a dropdown menu or by using tags.
  • Example: Searching for author:Smith will limit results to articles written by someone with the last name "Smith," while title:"climate change" will only show results where "climate change" appears in the title
