Scholars often split the discipline of philosophy into “analytic” and “continental” orientations. Although these two traditions often seem at odds with one another, the contemporary moment has sought to bridge this divide. This course aims to render current offerings in philosophy within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences more comprehensive by addressing some of the key reference points in continental philosophy. This course will explore the work of such notable philosophers as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Michel Foucault, Soren Kierkegaard, Giorgio Agamben, Simone de Beauvior, Slavoj Zizek, Judith Butler, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Jean-Paul Sartre, Max Stirner, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Lacan, and Alain Badiou. This course aims to explore continental philosophy as a practice of inquiry into the human condition and as a sociological exploration of the topology of the world.

Dr Duane Rousselle is a Canadian Sociologist and Psychoanalyst known for his work in continental philosophy, Lacanian psychoanalysis, and political theory. He has written extensively on psychoanalysis, anarchism, and critical theory, contributing to contemporary debates in these fields. Rousselle has authored and edited several books exploring the intersections of philosophy, sociology, and psychoanalysis.
