Course Overview

Scholars often split the discipline of philosophy into “analytic” and “continental” orientations. Although these two traditions often seem at odds with one another, the contemporary moment has sought to bridge this divide. This course aims to render current offerings in philosophy within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences more comprehensive by addressing some of the key reference points in continental philosophy. This course will explore the work of such notable philosophers as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Michel Foucault, Soren Kierkegaard, Giorgio Agamben, Simone de Beauvior, Slavoj Zizek, Judith Butler, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Jean-Paul Sartre, Max Stirner, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Lacan, and Alain Badiou. This course aims to explore continental philosophy as a practice of inquiry into the human condition and as a sociological exploration of the topology of the world.

Course Objectives

The course objectives are :

  • Comparing and contrasting numerous perspectives in ‘continental philosophy’ on the question of ‘world,’ ‘practice,’ and ‘science.’
  • Engage in practical world-building exercises (i.e., constructing epistemological spaces as a refuge from bad ‘infinities’).
  • Explain the practical significance of continental questions regarding the human condition.
  • Distinguish between central questions in continental philosophy and analytic philosophy.
  • Identify a dictionary of keywords in continental philosophy (i.e., being, becoming, noumena, rhizome, difference, regimes of knowledge, etc).
